Diane is willing to be contacted about Computer Science and Engineering, and she’s interested in collaboration regarding AP Computer Science curriculum and current trends in Engineering such as robotics and drones.

What about teaching excites you? I think it is important to make curriculum relevant and interesting to students. Food is always a motivating topic for students and a topic that easily catches the interest of all students. My “aha” moment is helping the students realize how much they need to know about the food they eat as well as the food needs of the future.

How do you help students make the industry or real-world connection to what they’re learning? In addition to food, technology is a topic that interests students. Teaching computer science/technology/engineering topics are always relevant to the students’ day-to-day activities. I tell the students, if they currently are a smart phone user or plan to be a smart phone user in the future, they need to possess up to date technology knowledge. I share statistics with my students such as, “It is estimated that 65% of children entering primary school today will ultimately end up working in completely new job types that don’t yet exist.”
