GrowNextGen industry leader

Leah McHale

Professor, soybean breeder and geneticist at The Ohio State University

I direct the soybean breeding and genetics program at The Ohio State University. Research in my laboratory focuses on the improvement of soybean varieties and understanding of the genetic basis of quantitative disease resistance, protein, and oil traits in soybean, as well as evaluation of plant breeding methods. My teaching responsibilities include breeding and genetics courses taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels and the training of the next generation of plant breeders through graduate student advising.

What is the benefit of collaboration between industry and education?

Collaboration between industry and education, especially early in the education process, provides students with a broader idea of the possible career avenues. Hopefully the outcome of this is a more engaged and well-trained work force.

What value/assistance can you and your company provide to teachers and classrooms as they connect with you?

I am happy to provide feedback or assistance with lesson plans and potentially host or participate in field trips.
