Career videos springboards to STEM research project

Amy Kochensparger teaches 10th grade Biology and 11/12th grade CCP Anatomy & Physiology at Eaton High School in Eaton, Oh. Kochensparger attended last summer’s Ag Biotech Academy in Springfield, Ohio, where she became familiar with the resources available at GrowNextGen.org. She showed career videos on entrepreneurship and biotechnology to her class, then discussed the science and varied fields that are incorporated into the career and the skills needed. The students were then assigned an independent research project to find an article on a STEM career and report back to the class.

Next, the students began a STEM research paper problem-solving to design or revise a concept.  The class used the videos to begin thinking about how their own idea could become feasible.  Students generated questions about marketing a product and discovering the science needed to develop their idea. This project will continue for the next few months.
