GrowNextGen industry leader

Andy Michel

Professor and Associate Chair, Department of Entomology at The Ohio State University

My job consists of 70% research on genetics of insect pests of corn and soybean and 30% on extension and outreach on agronomic pest management.

What is the benefit of collaboration between industry and education?

Collaboration facilitates a better understanding of the needs of both parties. The expertise by educators can help explain sometimes complicated technologies for industry and/or scientists that do not have experience or training.

What value/assistance can you and your company provide to teachers and classrooms as they connect with you?

I would be willing for in person or skype visits. I can (and have) provided insect and soybean samples to demonstrate concepts of pest movement and plant defense. I can host summer interns and even, depending on location, interns during the school year. I can also provide talks on biotechnology including GMOs.

Why should teachers connect with you through GrowNextGen?

One of the main insects I study is soybean aphid, which is easily reared and can be maintained in classrooms for a constant source of insects for experiments.
