I teach a high school biology class at Arcanum High School. I know that Chickquest is designed for elementary students, but I adapted it to fit my curriculum by starting with an inquiry lesson. I had the students look at the eggs and make predictions about what type breed of chicken would come from each egg based on the details of the shell. We then used some of the ChickQuest curriculum to jump into an embryology study that lasted for two of the three weeks, culminating in our chicks completing their embryonic development right in front of our eyes. The students loved it and it was a way to make a less-interesting topic something that they could really get into and enjoy. We had a blast! We checked the four that didn’t hatch—three died at various stages of development and one was not fertile at all. The kids thought that part was awesome!
