Egg-citing activities with Ohio Military Kids virtual camp

Did you know that Ohio 4-H and the Ohio National Guard work together to provide fun and supportive programs to military families? GrowNextGen joined the team during the military kids’ virtual camp, held online in July.

GrowNextGen ambassador Shaye Creamer talked to the campers about Ohio’s poultry industry. She asked if they knew how soybeans and chickens were connected, and several knew that chickens eat soybeans. Creamer said chickens are soybeans’ largest consumer!

Next, the group gathered paper and tape to engineer an egg catcher, an activity available on our website. With so many Ohio chickens producing so many eggs, gathering them safely is very important!

Engineers work to come up with a prototype design, then build and test their design. Ambassador Audrey Heitzman explained the parameters of the activity and encouraged them to be creative. The campers had some time to create an egg catcher, then they tested them. Heitzman challenged them to think of ways to improve their designs for greater effectiveness.

After the activity, campers asked the ambassadors questions about farming and agriculture. It was a great opportunity to help these youth learn about how important agriculture is here in Ohio!
